About Smart Image Cropper
Smart Crop reframes a photo to any common aspect ratio while keeping the important part in view. Instead of a blind center crop that cuts off heads and products, it finds the subject first, then places the frame around it.
How it works
Two kinds of analysis work together. A face detector marks every face in the image, and those areas get the highest priority. Then smartcrop.js scores the rest of the picture for visual interest: edges and fine detail, skin tones and saturated color. It tries many candidate crops at the ratio you chose and picks the one that keeps the most important content while respecting basic composition.
The suggested frame is just a starting point. You can drag it, resize it and choose an exact output width. The height follows the ratio automatically.
Which ratio to choose
- 1:1: square posts, profile pictures and marketplace thumbnails.
- 4:5: portrait posts on Instagram and Facebook, which take up more space in the feed.
- 9:16: Stories, Reels, TikTok and YouTube Shorts.
- 16:9: YouTube thumbnails, presentations, website banners and X/Twitter images.
- 3:2: classic photo prints and blog featured images.
Tips for the best results
- Set the output width to the platform's recommended size, for example 1080 px for Instagram, so it doesn't get recompressed badly.
- For group photos in a narrow ratio like 9:16, check that nobody at the edge has been cut in half, and nudge the frame if needed.
- Product photos work well too: with no faces, the cropper focuses on the area with the most detail and contrast.
- Crop from the highest-resolution original you have, since cropping always reduces the pixel count.
